Ice Cream, Knicksanity and Mutant Mosquitoes
Another Monday. Another heat wave. But GREAT news! You can cool off and celebrate with ice cream!
In 1984, President Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. We may be a day late, but there's nothing wrong with keeping the celebration going on a hot summer's day! :)
The Knicks spent the weekend trending for all the wrong reasons. First, newest player Jason Kidd is the latest athlete to get arrested for DWI, crashing his Escalade into a pole in the Hamptons. His arrest comes a month after David Diehl of the Giants sideswiped a bunch of parked cars in Astoria and got charged with DWI. Perhaps "Don't Drink and Drive" should be the new eye chart for professional athletes?
The other Knicks player making waves is Jeremy Lin, who appears to be Houston Rockets bound. According to multiple reports, the Knicks will not match the Rockets 3-year, $25.1 million offer for the team's most popular player in a decade. Basically, the Knicks can't afford the pricetag.
The most popular trend on Twitter this morning is #TheDateWasOverWhen. The most common theme seems to be "when you started talking about your ex."
Apollo 11 is a rising trend on Twitter because on this day in 1969 the rocket blasted into space from Cape Kennedy to become the first manned mission to the surface of the moon.
Residents of Florida are voicing their opposition to mutant mosquitoes - sounds terrifying, doesn't it? These are genetically modified mosquitoes designed by a British company to resist the spread of dengue fever. According to the company, Oxitec, the mosquito was developed in a lab and released in the Cayman Islands for the first time in 2009. The company approached Florida officials after dengue fever was reported in the Keys in 2009 and 2010. The petition started by a woman in Key West opposes the release because she says too many questions exist about whether the mosquito could mutate and what it might do to the eco-system. The company dismisses those concerns, saying only male mosquitoes that do not bite and do not carry dengue fever would be released. Sounds like the making of a good Hollywood B-Movie - Revenge of the Mutant Mosquitoes.
From the Orange County Register comes the story of a man and his surfing goats. Dana McGregor says he taught his goats to surf because he thought they would love it as much as he does!
