Giants sack Twitter, Tracy Morgan and Chinese New Year

Good morning!

The New York Giants not only reached the Super Bowl, but they sacked Twitter as they won the NFC Championship last night.  Anyone trying to log on to the system got the infamous "fail whale" during the final moments of the game and overtime.   The same thing happened as the New England Patriots won the AFC title game to earn their ticket to the Super Bowl.  All is well on Twitter this morning, but it is not the Giants who are trending in New York City.   That distinction belongs to Kyle Williams, who fumbled away the 49ers' fortunes on two punts.

You would think that Devin Thomas might be the one getting all of the attention in New York. After all, it was he who struck gold at Williams' expense.   Thomas, the Giants' No. 4 wide receiver, plays mainly on special teams and rarely gets an opportunity to make big plays.   Boy, did he come up big in a game that otherwise saw opportunities to change fortunes for either team.

Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler is going to be a papa Bear.  Cutler and fiancé Kristin Cavallari have announced they are expecting.  The couple went through some ups and downs over the last year…. Getting engaged, then calling it off, then getting engaged again, and now this news.

Tennis star Maria Sharapova is trending on Twitter this morning after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time since 2008.   She has never lost in the quarterfinals.

Other stories making for trending topics over the weekend….The death of Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football history…  Rep. Gabby Giffords announcing she will resign from office this week… Newt Gingrich winning South Carolina's Republican Primary…. And  Mitt Romney announcing, after losing in South Carolina, that he will release his tax returns this week.   You may recall the question hounded him the past couple of weeks as he stumbled through explanations why he was not releasing them.

Tracy Morgan surged on Twitter overnight after collapsing during an event at the Sundance Film Festival.   A hospital spokesperson said no drugs or alcohol were found in the comedian's system and Morgan's rep said he suffered from a combination of "exhaustion and altitude."  He remained in a Utah hospital this morning.

When I first saw John Edwards trending this morning, I thought the former presidential candidate was making news, but it turned out to be celebrity psychic medium John Edward who is making news.   It seems he met with Kim Kardashian and claimed to be communicating with her late father during the season finale of Kourtney and Kim Take New York.   When Edward asked if either of them were divorced, Kim burst into tears and said she didn't want to be married anymore.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Each year is associated with one of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac.  This year is the Year of the Dragon.  Chinese New Year is the most important of the Chinese holidays, celebrated by billions in China and around the world.  The celebration lasts for 15 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival.

A snow storm in Utah made for a viral video… The first minute or so is slow, but then vehicles start sliding all over the place.

This dirt bike rider has a viral video after he decided to live on the edge at the top of a mountain.  This video is the original version.  The one that is trending is a copy.

A high school mascot is trending after breaking a backboard during a recent game.

And among the most viewed animal videos this weekend is a pet bird waking up a cat.  No, the cat does not eat the bird.

That's the trend!

Have a great day,

Bob
