An Athlete's Struggle: Kym Hampton

Welcome to WABC TV’s Reset Your Life: The Revolution Blog!  It follows the ABC Daytime show, “The Revolution.”  The show is dedicated to transforming every aspect of your life from health and fitness to your home and your style.  Each Friday, this blog addresses the weight loss stories shared on the show as well as other women's health issues.  It also includes daily meal plans, exercise routines and music playlists contributed by experts in the tri-state area to help get you motivated to reset your life! 

I wanted to start this blog, because like thousands of women in the tri-state, I too have struggles and triumphs with weight.  I have had major weight losses and gains in the last 11 years. The highs and lows on the scale correspond with the highs and lows I've experienced through school and college, work and the challenges of adult life.  I am once again in the middle of a successful (I would like to say) weight loss journey. I've had some hangups in the last few weeks, but I am BACK! 

I feel social pressure about weight surrounds us every day and can add or take away from our self-esteem.  I also feel it’s important for women to talk about it in an open forum.  I would like to open up this space and encourage you to share your weight loss struggles and success stories with me. I would also love to hear about the music that motivates you!  Please leave your comments below.

This week, we followed the story of a Brooklyn woman who knows a thing or two about exercise and health. Kym Hampton is a former WNBA star who played for the New York Liberty.  Her career ended with the discovery of a knee injury 12 years ago.  She has struggled with her weight ever since.  Harley says Kym's body has been through a lot of wear and tear and she understandably has a lot of joint pain.  Because of that and her low impact exercise plan, she has to follow her meal plan to the letter!

The 49-year-old has a seven-year-old daughter and is in a serious relationship with her daughter's father.  She feels pressure from her family to lose weight and be healthy once again. She also wants to do it for herself.  She says she does not want to start going downhill when she turns 50 this year.  Kym said something on point at the beginning of her revolution. As she got on the scale she said, "You can't fix what you can't face."

Kym took a trip back home to Kentucky during her revolution to take a look back at her past as she plans for her future.  She said it was really good for her to get her goal in mind.  This is a look at Kym on Day 150 of her revolution.

She looks great and is now at the same weight she was as a basketball star!  Kym admits that during her revolution, she hit a wall.  During one of her workout days, she did everything except workout.  She cleaned her house, went through her daughter's closet and even pruned her plants!  But, she pushed through it and got her workout on! She had a goal going into her journey, but as she was getting closer to it, she realized she wanted to push herself even harder!

Kym was so inspired by her five-month revolution, she recorded a song about it!  It's part of her new journey of going after a music career.  I wish her the best!

Harley also showed us some fat-burning exercises that can be done anywhere, anytime and with very little equipment.

These exercises are to be done in ADDITION to our 10,000 steps a day program.  How are you doing on that?  I've found I have to make more of an effort than I thought I would since I walk all over the city on a daily basis. But, I'm doing it and that's what counts, right? :)
