Video of TSA pat down of girl sparks new debate

A Kentucky couple wants the TSA to change how it screens children after their 6-year-old daughter was frisked at the New Orleans airport.

They posted the video on YouTube.  It happened while the family was headed home from a vacation earlier this month.

The girl's father, Todd Drexel, told Good Morning America that Anna was confused by the search and started crying afterward because she thought she'd done something wrong.

In a statement, the Transportation Security Administration says the officer followed proper procedure but that the agency is reviewing its screening policies.

What do you think about the screening?  Should the TSA change how it screens children?  Click on comment to add to the discussion.  We may post what you write here or use it on Eyewitness News.

Unfortunately people out there dont know what to do, including the use of a child to perpetrate a crime.

I feel that the people, especially the ones who live in New York, should see the pictures of Bin Laden. We will never really believe it unless we see it. There is no reason that these pictures are now shown to all Americans.

The government should show respect to all the 3,000 people that were murdered because of him.

Well I for one believe that once America reaches the point where we trade our rights for security is the day that the terrorists win. Haven't any of you TSA supporters seen Star Wars? Or V for Vendetta? In both of these insightful films the constituents of their respective governments blindly handed over their rights in order to
ensure security. No one is absolutely safe and attempting to improve your security is one thing but to infringe on someones god given right is another. There are a million of other possible ways to improve the security of traveling Americans and this is definitely not working for the American public. If the majority of Americans do not feel that these changes are right then we should find an alternative method for improving ours security. Just think about the American soldier who is flying home to see his/her family for the first time in months, and is subjected to this kind of harassment. The point is that there are dozens of agencies that are dedicated to protecting us from the bad guys. 9/11 was every ones fault not just TSA. It was the CIAs, NSAs and all the other security agencies' faults. We are better protected now more than ever since 9/11 and touching my crotch with your hands isn't going to stop me from ingesting C4. Don't give your rights up so easily when there are so many other possibilities out their to keep us safe. Don't settle for what is easy. That's whats wrong today with Americans. They are pussies and take what they are given. This country was based on the principle of people who didn't take what was given them. They made things the way they wanted to. So stop being wimps and fight for your rights.

IM CONVIENCED NOW THAT THE SAME PEOPLE THAT ARE SO UPSET ABOUT A CHILD BEING PATTED DOWN ARE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT THE TERRORIST ARE LOOKING TO RECRUIT! LAST TIME I CHECHED TERRORIST DIDN'T COME IN ONE FORM OF RACE,SIZE OR AGE GROUP! AND I ALSO RECALL THE LAST RECRUITERS WERE AMREICANS WHO JOINED THE MUSLIM NATION AND WHAT ABOUT THE PARENTS WHOS TAKING THIER OWN KIDS LIFE WHAT THAT HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HOW MUCH THEY CARE ABOUT YOUR LIFE! To pick out a six year old child a a possible security threat and frisk her for dangerous weapons in an American airport is utterly insane. If anyone else abducted someone’s child and then sexually molested them they would be rightly called a pedophile and locked up for a long time, but when the government does it not only is it deemed acceptable, but it also trains a whole generation of children that being kidnapped by an adult and having their genitals groped is normal.

Everybody that is defending the TSA is a MORON. That's right MORON'S. Not only is this stripping our 4th Amendment Rights, it is down right unethical. We are just as likely to have a terror threat than getting mugged in the broad daylight.

America need's to wake up on how the Government is stripping our freedom's and right's. Everybody is too worried about whose going to win the next Superbowl, Whose going to win Dancing With The Star's, Jersey Shore, etc...Everybody is sleeping and need's to be waken before it's too late.

Also, the MORONIC TSA Defender's don't realize that soon they will have TSA Checkpoint's not only at airports. But, concert's, sport's event's, city corner's, etc...Try adding that to your "EXCUSE" of Drive, not fly!

TSA = Tyrannical Sexual Assualter's

these parents need to get a hold of themselves.. do they think their child was the first one to be patted down? my 7 year old daughter was just "randomly" chosen to be patted down last month in Charleston, SC. Did I make a big deal? no I dealt with it. These parents want their 15 mins of fame. They need to go back to their boring life.

valerie

Sick and tired of this nonsence about screening procedures. We all know what terrorist say "They stop at nothing" so cut the chase believe what is being said to you> Do you really want another (911) ask yourselves this questions. We are professionals at work. Many people appreciate what we do on a daily basis, sorry we can not take time out for foolish people. Do you ever think about the air controllers and their sleep deprivation? If you do not want to be screened please STAY HOME". Personally I don't care less work for me. But believe me, we here at TSA love what we do daily, and unlike you as a hater of what we do really don't care. The traveling public is our (OUR) Priority. Let it be known. STOP QUESTIONING WHAT WE DO TO PROTECT OUR CUSTOMERS.

BROOKLYN

NEXT TIME TAKE THE BUS, TRAIN OR EVEN BETTER YOUR AUTOMOBILE. WHEN YOU UTILIZE SERVICES ON PRIVATE PROPERTY, YOU SUBJECT YOURSELF TO THEIR RULES. INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING, THE PARENTS SHOULD HAVE USED THE OPPORTUNITY AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE BEFORE THEY WENT TO THE AIRPORT, THAT WAY, THE CHILD WOULD KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHY. IT IS BECAUSE OF TERRORIST!!! DO YOU KNOW WHAT ONE LOOKS LIKE? BECAUSE I CERTAINLY DON'T. THE CHILD WAS PROBABLY CRYING SIMPLY BECAUSE IT WAS A STRANGER. I HOPE IT WASN'T BECAUSE SHE'S AFRAID OF AFICAN AMERICANS. THE TSA AGENT WAS SIMPLY DOING HER JOB. IF ANYONE DOESN'T WANT THEIR CHILD SUBJECT TO A PAT DOWN THEN I GUESS THEY WILL FIND AN ALTERNATE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. CHECK EVERYONE, SAFETY FIRST!!!

ew ortiz

Common sence and discreation should be used when dealing with children a visual check for bulges should have been enough , While I believe sometype of check should be conducted that kind of patdown is too over the wall

Bert

With extremists using women & children as instruments of destruction, nobody should expect any one to be excepted from rigorous screening/examination. I would not fly if I knew that somebody on the same flight was not thoroughly checked by Security. The TSA is far from perfect, but it is what is necessary for survival in these dangerous times. Some Americans apparently believe that "It cannot happen here." Remember 9/11.

My 12 year old son is a diabetic on an insulin pump. Previously he has been able to go through security without a problem. On a recent trip to Colorado he was subjected to a similar search. He was upset, scared and humiliated. He was worried he had done something wrong. He did not understand. The Security detail were kind and explained everything, but it did not calm his fears. There was nothing I could do for him. I felt helpless!

People don't realize the extent of what terrorist will do to do harm! These agents are not only checking for explosives. On 9/11, simple box cutters were used to bring down an airliner! Items easily concealed on a child. Unfortunately, the same people that are aghast at searching children are also against profiling for terrorist. If they were allowed to search people who "fit" the profile, we would all have a better flying experience with less intrusiveness and shorter lines!

G.fior

I think the parents need to get over themselves...the child seems fine and unfortunately sometimes we need to explain to our children that there are bad people in the world who would actually use a child to do bad things....my son is 12 and he was patted down just last month....I think the parents are making it worse for the child by advertising it and embarrassing her....but anyone will do anything for 15 minutes of fame....just another simple case of parents using their children to do something bad!

pati

everyone should be screened-including children. as a retired correction officer of nyc you would not believe the amount of visitors that try to sneak drugs and other contraband in their childrens pampers. we live in a sick world so lets be safe.

Sal Gualano

it's very simple really, if you want to fly there are certain procedures that we are now subject to, if you don't want to be subjected to these safety measures then find another means of transport, I watched the video the agent was very gentle and kind to the child during the search.

BROOKLYN

THE TSA AGENT WAS SIMPLY DOING HER JOB TO PROTECT ALL OF US THAT TRAVEL. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO GET INTO THE MIND OF A TERRORIST. IF I WAS A TERRORIST AND KNEW THAT A CHILD WOULD NOT BE PATTED DOWN LIKE AN ADULT, GUESS WHAT? MY CHILD WOULD BE TRAPPED WITH EXPLOSIVES OR IT WOULD BE STORED IN THE BOTTOM OF THEIR DIAPER. IF PEOPLE DON'T WANT THEIR CHILDREN PATTED DOWN FOR EVERYONES SAFETY THEN THEY SHOULD FIND ANOTHER MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. WE AS AMERICANS COMPLAIN TOO MUCH AND LOOK TO SUE FOR EVERYTHING. WE CAN NOT PUT A DOLLOR AMOUNT ON YOUR SAFTEY AND/OR LIFE!!!!

Joey

i don't agree with the TSA frisking the 6 year old. how is it its okay for them to frisk a 6 year old but people are still getting on to the flight with blades and knives. TSA needs a new head of command because who ever is running it and hiring the employees are not doing a good job with it at all...

Jlags

Understanding that the TSA has a job to do, in some cases, a common sense standard should be applied. As far as TSA agents in general, you get what you pay for.

Dorrie

are these people asleep?
Dont they know that drug dealers and terrorists use children to smuggle things? Dont want your kid pattewd down? drive or take the train

Megan March

I think that the security was doing the right thing but went a little too far.

Gina fior

I think the parents should get over it....there are sick people in the world that would use a child to carry things.... My son is 12 and just last month got patted down...you sometimes need to explain to your children that there are bad people in the world and unfortunately the good people are always the ones who pay for it,

rob430

Good job TSA. Everyone gets a pat down. As soon as you make an exception you create an opening for a terrorist. Those parents a reality check.

amy

i dont think its s problem if only tsa would make child feel comfortable not make the child think they did something wrong.for examples say a joke to them to keep the frisk off there mind, think its a game and at the end of a frisk they wont be so scare or thing they did something wrong.thats just my opinion

Tom

I think this is a sick world we live in if a 6 year old girl got to pat down

Bill

The TSA was only doing their job. It is not beyond a terorist or any other nut to use a child to smuggle something onto an airplane. The parents need to get over themselves, and if they don't like the pat downs, then don't fly.

Judy

The medical field touch our children all the times, shall we stop them also? They are both doing a job to protect us.

Rational Parent

I think the child was victim of her "media-hungry parents", not the TSA. Do they post on U-tube every time she crys when a nurse or doctor touches their child? We need a rational attitude to enforce what is good for the health, saftey and welfare of our children & our country.

Darlene Semar

It is an outrage that TSA officers are patting down 6 year olds. What's next checking infant's diapers? The TSA is over stepping what the agency is there for-looking for terrorists and bomb making materials. They are not suppose to racially profile so now anyone can be subjected to a pat down. It is humiliating and an unreasonable search on all Americans. Yes we want to fly safely, but how much of our rights to privacy are we being forced to give up?

John

TSA is a waste of time just look at a subway entrance 5 agents and 4 cops, ask them what they found on any given day a person holding a joint or some other minor infraction.Just wait it will get better with sattelite and ground cameras, pretty soon they will be asking us to wear license plates so they can identify us at any time.

Bill

Unfortunately there are people out there that will do anything, including the use of a child to perpetrate a heinous crime. What if the mother in Newburgh, who drowned her children, decided to plant explosives on her children and use a commercial airline. Then the TSA would come under scrutiny for not doing their job. Come on people!!! If you don’t like it don’t fly…DRIVE!!!

Judy

Everyone would feel differently it they found out that a 6 year old girl carried a bomb that blew up a plane. It's up to the parent to speak to their child about what's about to happen.

As adults: If we speak negative about a situation, the child is also going to feel the same, (Kids are smart) the parents should have discussed with the child what was happening and why in a positive manner.

If there is a fire and mom is crying the child will cry. The parents reaction was placed on this child. The TSA worker was doing her job. We take our children to get immunization shots and they cry, shall we stop that also?

The parent did not like the child being touched by a TSA worker, but think it's okay to post it on you tube for the "world" to see. I think that's sick if you ask me.

Ernest Eans Jr

All you people are full of it. TSA is doing their job!!! Those parents are full of it!! From what I saw from the video the child was not crying or looked upset or stressed. They just wanted their 15 mins of fame. If the TSA didn't do pad downs or scanning they would complain they wasn't doing enough. Plus it seems to me that the only people that are complaining are white folks!!! I have yet seen or heard any people of any other color complain about the searching procedures. It's always white folks!! What the hell!! If you don't like it, don't fly!!

Bill

PEGGY

I BET IF SHE WOULDVE GAVE HER A LOLLY POP SHE WOULDNT HAVE CRIED. IF YALL FEEL SO STRONGLY ABOUT IT NEXT TIME TAKE THE BUS.

Chyshkevych

I believe that the search was fair because who knows what the girl could have on her. there are definately cases where people tried to smuggle drugs and other bad things on kids who didn't know better. This country's biggest concern is SAFETY not the embarrasment of overprotective parents.

concerned mother & airline worker

What would truly put tears in a child's eye is to witness another sept 11 attack. Do we want children to be easy "bomb mules" ?!(as the terrorist have done to their women in the past). How short is the publics memory? How irresponsible is our media? Would there be outrage if the child was wearing a burka?

Brad

I travel quite bit for my job. Personally I do not see any problem with what the TSA did here. It was in public which is a good thing. There was no hiding anything. It was done in front of the parents. The TSA employee was just doing her job. I think we need more security. What would we all be saying if there was another bomb on the plane in some persons under ware? You must not profile right? Not all terrorists are dark skinned Muslims. I remember in Vietnam when children killed our solders. This sort of screening is not new. If you don't want to be exposed to it then please do not travel by air. Take a bus.

DENISE

PLEASE PPL GET OVER IT IF IT AINT ONE THING ITS ANOTHER ANYBODY WITH EYES CAN CLEARLY SEE THAT THE TSA AGENT DID A PROPER JOB OF EXPLAINING WHAT SHE WAS DOING IT WAS UP TO THE PARENTS TO EXPLAIN WHAT WAS GONNA HAPPEN AND WHY WHEN THE GET TO THE AIRPORT TO MAKE THE LITTLE GIRL PREPARED THATS THE SAME THING THATS GOES ON IN THE MEDICAL FIELD EVRYONE DOESN'T LIKE TO BE TOUCH IN CERTAIN PLACES BUT ONCE YOU EPLAIN TO THEM WHY ITS NECESSARY THEY COME TO BE MORE OPEN TO IT SO FOR ALL YOU WHO CLAIM THEY CANT WATCH THE VIDEO AS IF SHE BEING MOLESTED YALL GO OUT THERE A PROTECT THE COUNRTY!!!!!

E.M.S.

A TSA official (female) was on Dr. Oz show recently and said the rules are such that children under 12 are Not frisked.
Clearly that is not so!
It didn't explain why that 9 year old boy was made to strip to the waist and be frisked in the open airport, and it doesn't explain this either.
Go to the AARP website and check out their long list of horrifying complaints of this on persons of all ages! You will be sickened.

Ken Hodge

TSA is the most moronic government agency in existence. If they are not going to profile, don't waste our time and money. I recently went through DIA with 2 broken legs, in an airport owned wheelechair and the agent spent 15 minutes patting me down, feeling inside my clothing. testing his gloves and cloths in the machine to detect explosive including the wipedown of THEIR chair, only to be finished with X-raying both of my casts. Let the airtravelers rest easy--no one who is handicapped will be a threat!

Nancy

Most people will not agree with me, that's OK.

The minute we stop checking children at the airports as well as we check adults, the terrorists will use childen to put explosives on the planes. The terrorists have no reguard for life. They are making a statement. Do we want to give them a reason to use a child to make the statement.

Lorraine B

I agree that this is unconstitutional and veiled under the disguise of "Homeland security". Where was our security on 9/11? Where was the guy "at the button"? Why didn'y the military respond witin 15 seconds with their million dollar Predators to intercept or if need be shoot down the hijacked weapons/planes? I have not flown since 9/11 and dread when the time comes for Disneyworld. I have 7 yr old and 15 yr old daughters. What is the alternative,a full body radiation scan! This is no longer the country of the free! Where has our freedom gone? Please people, let us not be the scapegoats for this country's inability to protect us or rather our wealthy's oil interests! Let's stop being suckered into their propaganda!

N. Jones

Ok I feel sorry if the little girl got upset by the pat down. But this country cant have it both ways. You cant tell them to keep us as safe as possible and then tie their hands. The agent explained everything she was doing her mother was right there I have no problems with the video. Everyone is yelling about out rights being violated. But what is the alternative.

Mr chef

Children are used as excuse for everything , but remember the World Trade Centers I saw them come down from my roof and remember Vietnam where Charlie would even use children to attack us Americans any way possible. as long as the had a TSA female doing the pat down and not getting Nasty it is for our SAFETY....WE SHOULD NEVER LET OUR GUARD DOWN AGAIN, NO MATTER WHAT.

BJ Eversley

They need to search everyone. It will not be beneath a terrorist to use a child. They just need to find a better way!

USAsecurity

The security of this country is extremely more important than the feelings of a crying kid. If it was a middle eastern kid getting pat down I dont think you guys would make such a big fuss over it. Unfortunately we are living in dangerous times and it calls for extreme measures. This country is at war and our fronts must be protected regardless of the cost. Its necessary to implement these type of protocol to protect this country and its citizens.

Margie

While I would not be happy if they did that to my grandchildren, I understand why they are doing it. If TSA eliminate any one group - terriorists would use that. They don't care if they blow up a child or not. It's not a pleasant time nowadays.

Neil

I think that TSA needs to be watched as well. I had an incident at Newark airport where my kids were not behaving and a TSA agent came over and yelled at me telling me what a "disgusting parent" I am for yelling at my child in public. At the request of my wife I chose not to ask him how dare he say that to me because i am sure he would have tried to discipline me which would have ruined my trip to Disney. I am not sure what the guidelines are for hiring these people but something has got to change. I am not sure who they think they are. This is ridiculous!!!

Denise

A Lot of parents use there children to hide things, this little girl should not have been patted down but should have just walked through a detector. Some parents use there children to steal, but she should not have been violated with a pat down, she was 6.

Susan

I saw nothing wrong in that video. What about the mother who used her child to hide a bomb years ago? They did not hurt this child in any way. Perhaps the parents should have discussed why things like this have to be done. It's a shame it's come to this.

Denise

This was a disgrace. I don't know how her parents were able to stand there, I would have grabbed my child and called a copy and pressed charges for sexual abuse. These TSA people think who they are.

Shana

This is total ridiculousness! A 6 year old?!!

Bob S

The TSA needs to be watched. They have been abusive to innocent USA citizens, I have seen them intentionally damage peoples property. They bark at you if you watch them handle your luggage at the airport. Many of these people are Flunkies that could not work anyplace else. HOw do they expect respect from USA Taxpayers, if they have little or no respect for USA Citizen Passengers or their property. Now they are even " handling " little kids ! I wonder what really happens to those body scan pics ? Don't tell me they do not have means of storing and printing body scan pics. Why not offer passengers prints of their own body scans. Maybe that would help offset the cost we are ALL paying for !

TSA needs to be supervised by a more " responsible " agency !

Jacqueline Tellalian

what do I think?? I think this is INSANE and needs to STOP! the paranoia level in this country has hit new lows to allow this to be done this to a 6 yr. old!!

Jennifer Carroll

Touching a child like that is unacceptable. If someone touched my child like that anywhere but the airport, I would have them charged with assault. For some reason, that sort of contact is legal at the airport but illegal everywhere else in the county. I teach my daughter not to let anyone touch her private body and having a person do it is scary for the child and WRONG!

Marion

I could not watch the video all the way through. I find this intrusive, abusive, traumatizing and heartbreaking.
What have we become?
