Another season of Dancing With The Stars. Our normal blogger, Jennifer Matarese is on a much deserved vacation, so I’m filling in. However, I must admit I’m a huge Giants fan and they are playing tonight, but I promised Jen to focus at least 97 percent of my attention to Dancing With the Stars.
It’s an interesting cast this season, and I don’t know that there is a clear cut favorite like in seasons past. Some say Ricki Lake, or Hope Solo, but if I always say look out for the athletes, so in addition to Solo, keep your eye on Ron Artest. However, I think a long shot here could be Rob Kardashian. I feel like everyone watches that show, so he’s going to get a lot of fan votes.
First up is Los Angeles Lakers star and former St. John’s player Ron Artest. Artest says he’s doing the show in honor of his daughter who has battled Cancer. He’s dancing the Cha Cha with his partner first time DWTS dancer, Peta Murgatroyd. I have no idea what they are dancing to, but it sounds like a bad Kid N Play remix. These guys were out of sync, but I’d imagine it’s pretty difficult to dance with someone who’s 6’7”.
DWTS has a new set and it seems the dancers had to walk a mile from the dance floor to the perch to receive their scores. The judges scored 5, 4, 5. I agree with Bruno’s 4. These guys have a lot of work to do beginning with Ron’s hair color.
Well it only took 10 minutes to mention the Kardashian’s. Everyone loves this reality family, and brother Rob is dancing with my personal favorite Cheryl Burke. Rob says he’s doing the show to ‘boost’ his confidence and step out of his sisters shadows. They are dancing the Waltz.
Not a bad dance, both looked pretty elegant out there on the dance floor. The crowd is going crazy, and again I could see this guy holding up the trophy at the end of the competition. The scores were 6, 5, 5. I give them a 6.
Next up is Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas. She started her intro off with saying that she is “Not a Bitch”. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess that is how her character was perceived on “The Hills”. All I know about her, is she broke up with boyfriend Jay Cutler, and as she just mentioned, this show will get her mind off things. They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha.
These two seem to have the best chemistry of the first three couples. Moved around the dance floor well with each other. Only real criticism I have is Kristin might want to make some different facial expressions. She smiled the same smile the entire dance. We shall see. Scores are 7, 6, and 6. I think if I could give a 6.5 I would, but would lean towards the 6 more than the 7. So 6!
Chynna Phillips and her partner Dovolani are next up on the dance floor. Phillips of course from the group Wilson Phillips will be leading off with the Waltz. Another good chemistry pairing. There were some missteps, but overall I think they did a great job. This could be a duo to watch. The judges loved her! Before the judges give their scores, I will tell you I’d give an 8. Judges scores are 8, 7, 7.
Nancy Grace up next with first time pro Tristan McManus. Now everyone has an opinion about Nancy Grace, but one thing is for sure, she loves her jobs. If she puts as much into the dancing as she puts into her work, she’s going to be just fine, but I’m a little skeptical.
During the commercial break I flipped over to the Giants game. Eli Manning threw an interception and I give him a 1 on that play! Okay, I know these are two different demographics, so I’ll keep from making too many football references, but work with me :)
Okay, back to Nancy and Tristan. They are going to be dancing the Cha Cha Cha and Nancy already seems into it. Oh boy, after watching this intro, this could be a long night for Nancy. We shall see. Starting out behind the news desk, and rips off her jacket and breaks into dance. These two have a long way to go, but Nancy seemed to be having a good time. The problem here is, I wonder how many fan votes she’ll get, cause it seems a lot of people have strong opinions against her usually. Her scores, 5, 5, 6. I’d give her a 5.
Next up is defending champion Kym Johnson and David Arquette. For me this is the most intriguing group. Arquette in the news lately for his marital problems with Courtney Cox and at any moment he can ‘go off the deep end’ Arquette says he has been sober for 8 months, and kudos to him for that! I think if anything, he could be the most entertaining cast member this season. Kym and David start off dancing the Waltz.
A very nice dance with these two. Good chemistry, and Arquette was out there having a good time, and seemed nervous for the scores. 6, 6, 6 for Arquette, seems appropriate for a guy that starred in the “Scream” movies. I agree with the scores. Oh, and Courtney in the audience with their daughter, nice touch!
Now for a little brotherly rivalry. Sure there’s Peyton and Eli in the NFL, but on DWTS it’s Max and Val Chemerkovskiy. Val is first up dancing with former George Clooney girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis. Apparently she’s a model, but is it possible she’s more famous for dating George?
They were fast moving and were having fun out there. I’m really glad Val didn’t drop her at the end. The judges are kind of ripping her, and basically saying she needs to step it up or she’s done. Before they give their scores, I’d give her a 5. C’mon judges let’s remember this is week 1 and these are NOT professionals. Scores are 5, 5, 5. So the judges agreed with me, but were pretty harsh on their comments.
Next up brother Maksim and U.S. soccer star Hope Solo. Maks is a fan favorite (I’m assuming with the ladies) and I was surprised to hear he had never won before. I’m guessing the girls who watch this show are pulling for Maks, and the guys who are watching are big Hope Solo fans.
Good chemistry with these two, but they have a ton of work to do. There were out of sync on some of their moves. I can’t imagine the nerves with these first time dancers. These two I think are going far into the competition. 7, 7, 7 for these two on Channel 7, so I’ll agree and give a 7!
Up next Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya. Carson the fashion guru is very update about this competition. They begin with the Cha Cha Cha. Now I’m not sure about the moves, but Carson was having a really good time out there. The judges were egging him on, and the crowd seemed to love him. He brings energy to the dance floor, and he’s going to be sticking around for a while. I’d give him a 7 for his first dance, let’s see what the judges say. 6, 5, 6 were the scores which seem kind of low since the judges were raving about the performance.
Next up a remarkable story with veteran J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff. Martinez was in an accident while serving our country in Iraq and after serving and being injured by a road bomb, he became an actor on a soap opera. Their first dance was The Waltz, and Martinez knocked it out of the park. He was having fun and the chemistry with these two was some of the best of the night. It did not seem like week 1 for these two, and if I were judging I would probably give them an 8, just to show they were the best of the night. 8, 7, 7 were the scores. Apparently myself and Carrie Ann are on the same page.
Next up former talk-show host Ricki Lake and Derek Hough. Hough didn’t dance last season, but has come back. Ricki said Kirstie Alley inspired her to join the cast this season, and she’s hoping to lose some weight.
Ricki and Derek started out the season dancing the Waltz. It was a good opening dance, and Hough seems to be a good teacher, so this could be a duo to watch. 7, 6, 7 were the scores. I’d agree with the 6, but these two should advance.
Finally it’s Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer. Chaz got most of the press coming into this season, and now it’s time to see what he’s got.
First dance for these two is the Cha Cha Cha. There was chemistry, and they definitely were having fun out there. Just like everyone else, tons of work to do. Judges loved Chaz in their remarks. I’d give him a 6 after the first dance. Judges went 6, 5, and 6.
So that’s it for night one of Dancing With The Stars. I think one thing is for sure, this is a WIDE OPEN competition this season.
Results show tomorrow at 9 p.m. on Channel 7, following a special at 8 p.m. where you can learn more about the cast.
