Temperatures are Trimmed a Bit, but Still a VERY Mild January Continues for the NYC Area!
Rain is on the way again for Thursday afternoon and into Friday morning. Then 50s return!
Good Morning, There are some low clouds in the Tri-State Area early today, which will take at least a couple of hours to break up... But local barometers were rising as of 3 a.m. and the wind was generally out of the north and northwest... Therefore, a front has managed to push through the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, and the drier air which will be filtering in behind it will allow for the sun to come out for at least a while... While it'll be somewhat cooler than yesterday was, as we've been saying since the beginning of the week, temperatures this afternoon will still be about 4-6 degrees above the seasonal averages... A ridge of high pressure on this morning's weather map was centered over eastern portions of the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes, and this should be the "driving force" behind our weather today and tonight... Meanwhile, a wave of low pressure in the southern Plains states continues to tap into rich moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and it is going to be the "key role-player" in our weather towards the end of the week... For what its worth, there are some global models which are showing a small amount of precipitation printing out in central/eastern Pennsylvania, parts of southeastern New York state and in southern New England late tonight and tomorrow... While the amounts are generally only around 0.01", we're still concerned that a ribbon of moisture streaming into the mid-Atlantic states could yield a touch of rain or some drizzle... If that does manage to happen, the rain may freeze on some surfaces... This is one of the things that tends to occur when mild and moist air pushes into the teeth of a large high pressure system, so we must address the possibility of it... Rain tomorrow will be overspreading the Eastern Region, and the steadiest will be reaching the Northeast very late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night... As a series of low pressure systems (one sliding out of the Tennessee Valley, and the other drifting in from the Great Lakes) reaches the East Coast on Friday morning, rain along the coastal plain should last for a while before ending either late in the morning or early Friday afternoon... With some drier air attempting to punch into the area on the heels of this corridor of rain, temperatures in most places should have no trouble reaching the lower or middle-50s... Rainfall totals should be close to an inch for the 24-hour period ending at noon on Friday... It'll be somewhat cooler this weekend, but it looks as if the much-anticipated colder air we've been talking about the past couple of days won't be arriving until later on Sunday or Sunday night... It'll be seasonably cold early next week, and then temperatures should 'bounce back' once again... Have a good day !!!
